Y'know the first time I had HRT explained to me it sounded like bullshit. Mentioned this before, but when I first started keeping millipedes around 15 years ago care was very basic. It was often advice to keep them in small enclosures with maybe a hide or two and that’s it. Now care standards have moved on and big, enriching enclosures are what keepers push for. And the difference really shows!
My original millipedes in their basic set up used to spend all their time hiding away, only coming out briefly to eat. My current millipede, however, comes out every day to explore and climb all over her enclosure! She loves being out and even though she has multiple hiding spots she usually choses to sleep on top of one of her logs or sometimes even right at the front of her enclosure. Just from her behaviour I can see she clearly feels content and safe in her tank, which I put a lot of work into making perfect for her.
It’s easy to dismiss animals like invertebrates as not needing/caring about having an enriching enclosure, but it’s not true. Even “simple” creatures need and deserve a suitable environment in captivity. Thankfully the invert keeping community tend to be very good about providing correct care and always pushing for improvements. Shame the same can’t be said for many other pet-keeping communities (looking at you, reptile keepers who think having snakes in barren racks is ok).
